Los Angeles InDesign User Group
Ad Agency Workflow, plus InDesign CS5.5

Ogilvy & Mather

The Los Angeles InDesign User Group returned to the scene of the crime in May — Ogilvy & Mather, the international advertising, marketing, and public relations agency, where we were born. Our host was the gracious Bryon Hutchens, who not only made sure everything ran smoothly, but conducted a tour of the agency himself. The User Group was particularly pleased that Ogilvy honored their commitment to host the meeting even though, as it turns out, they were in the midst of remodeling their premises, something that was unanticipated early on.
Andrew Keith Strauss discussed the new features in InDesign CS5.5 which are particularly directed to mobile and interactive applications. Although Andrew had been scheduled to speak, his topic was to have been type and typography. Thanks to Andrew for changing his presentation at the last minute as a result of the CS5.5 release.
The big prize of the evening was won by Chuck Golding of Golding Publications, who chose InDesign CS5.5. Rick Torres and Robert Cardenas each won one-year subscriptions to InDesign Magazine. And each of the following won Square Card Readers, hardware allowing users to accept credit cards using their cell phones: William Baughman, Michael Diaz, Chuck Golding, Kevin Hughes, Byron Hutchens, Kara D. Lebovitz, Craig Matsuno, Patrick Pina, Alvin Takamori and Rick Torres. The readers were provided courtesy of User Group member Michael Grant. Congratulations to all.
Here's a shout out to the meeting's facilitators: Adobe, InDesign Magazine, O’Reilly Press, Peachpit Press, Andrew Keith Strauss and especially Bryon Hutchens.
We are looking for people who want to get involved with the administration of the group. Maybe you have web skills, newsletter skills, an eye for photos, want to conduct the raffles. Whatever. Let's talk.
Kelly McCathran, who runs the Adobe Creative Suite Lovers User Group San Francisco, is making a trip to Los Angeles especially to present at our next meeting Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 7 p.m. Continuing the policy of holding meetings in various locations within the southland, this meeting will be held at Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave., Van Nuys, CA 91401. Her topic will be InDesign for eReader, Mobile and Tablet Publishing. She will cover creating ePub files from InDesign CS5.5 (and earlier). You will see how to control the display of content for eReading devices by relinking your InDesign styles to CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). In addition, she'll review the differences in adding dynamic content for delivery as Flash (SWF) and PDF.
