New, Later Meeting Time

With the highest attendance so far at our last meeting, it looks like the decision to change to a later meeting time is a winner. So for all of you who need to drive a bit, you can now drive a bit slower. The start time has been moved from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Meetings will end at 10 p.m. (or thereabouts).

InDesign CS5.5

Why do we get so excited when a new version (of anything) comes out? Time was this excitement was limited to new cars and film premieres. Now we pant in anticipation of a new white phone.

Well, if a new phone gets your juices slowing, get ready for Creative Suite CS5.5 including a updated version of InDesign. The program’s new and enhanced tools increase your ability to handle interactivity, video, and audio for playback on tablets, smartphones and computers. Find out all about it at our next meeting.

InDesign at Ogilvy

At most InDesign User Group meetings, we discuss specific features of the program. We’ll do that at this meeting too with the release of InDesign CS5.5. But in addition, a panel of Ogilvy & Mather designers will talk about their use of InDesign during the course of their day-to-day work. We’ll get a peek into the agency’s work flow, from receiving initial work orders through in-house proofing.

Ogilvy & Mather, an international advertising, marketing and public relations agency based in Manhattan, operates 497 offices in 125 countries with approximately 16,000 employees. Interestingly enough, the very first meeting of our user group was held at Ogilvy, so this meeting makes a return to where we were born.

Meeting Notes

The Los Angeles InDesign User Group returned to the scene of the crime in May — Ogilvy & Mather, the international advertising, marketing, and public relations agency, where we were born. Our host was the gracious Bryon Hutchens, who not only made sure everything ran smoothly, but conducted a tour of the agency himself. The User Group was particularly pleased that Ogilvy honored their commitment to host the meeting even though, as it turns out, they were in the midst of remodeling their premises, something that was unanticipated early on.

Andrew Keith Strauss discussed the new features in InDesign CS5.5 which are particularly directed to mobile and interactive applications. Although Andrew had been scheduled to speak, his topic was to have been type and typography. Thanks to Andrew for changing his presentation at the last minute as a result of the CS5.5 release.

The big prize of the evening was won by Chuck Golding of Golding Publications, who chose InDesign CS5.5. Rick Torres and Robert Cardenas each won one-year subscriptions to InDesign Magazine. And each of the following won Square Card Readers, hardware allowing users to accept credit cards using their cell phones: William Baughman, Michael Diaz, Chuck Golding, Kevin Hughes, Byron Hutchens, Kara D. Lebovitz, Craig Matsuno, Patrick Pina, Alvin Takamori and Rick Torres. The readers were provided courtesy of User Group member Michael Grant. Congratulations to all.

Thank You

Here’s a shout out to the meeting’s facilitators: Adobe, InDesign Magazine, O’Reilly Press, Peachpit Press, Andrew Keith Strauss and especially Bryon Hutchens.

Job Opportunities

We are looking for people who want to get involved with the administration of the group. Maybe you have web skills, newsletter skills, an eye for photos, want to conduct the raffles. Whatever. Let’s talk.

Next Meeting

Kelly McCathran, who runs the Adobe Creative Suite Lovers User Group San Francisco, is making a trip to Los Angeles especially to present at our next meeting Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 7 p.m. Continuing the policy of holding meetings in various locations within the southland, this meeting will be held at Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave., Van Nuys, CA 91401. Her topic will be InDesign for eReader, Mobile and Tablet Publishing. She will cover creating ePub files from InDesign CS5.5 (and earlier). You will see how to control the display of content for eReading devices by relinking your InDesign styles to CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). In addition, she’ll review the differences in adding dynamic content for delivery as Flash (SWF) and PDF.
