You spoke and we heard you! For all of you who thought the 5:30 p.m. start just made no sense — especially for working stiffs or those who needed to drive a ways, we have moved the meeting start time from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Meetings will now end at 10 p.m.

Mastering the Power of Styles in InDesign

Our St. Patrick’s Day speaker is Beverly Houwing whose topic will be “Mastering the Power of Styles in InDesign.“ She will show us how to accomplish challenging formatting of text by using nested styles, next style, smart text flow and -- get ready now -- GREP. This presentation will focus on automating and facilitating the application of a variety of styles from text within a paragraph and to multiple paragraphs without resorting to manually selecting portions of the text or individual paragraphs. She will also show us how to take advantage of GREP expressions to find certain pieces of text, like URLs, phone numbers, etc. and how to apply specific formatting to them. In addition — yes, there’s more — Beverly will show us how to create a table of contents and cross reference -- both of which are dependent on the use of paragraph styles.

Last month was an all-time high in attendance. Way to grow!

Beverly Houwing was our St. Patrick’s Day presenter, speaking on “Mastering the Power of Styles in InDesign.“ She showed us how to accomplish challenging formatting of text by using nested styles, next style, smart text flow and -- get ready now -- GREP. Before her formal presentation, we were treated to an overture of her exceptional photography.

The big prize of the evening was won by first-time attendee William Baughman, who chose CS5 Flash. Norine Lukaczyk won Makszware’s Q2ID plug-in. Robin O’Connell and Deborah Talley each won one-year subscriptions to InDesign Magazine. Estey Theriault won a three-month subscription the Stock Layouts LLC Template Library. About the Presenter

Beverly Houwing

Beverly Houwing is an Adobe Certified Instructor. She worked for Adobe Systems for seven years as a Business Development Manager and Adobe Certified Expert. During that time she worked as a representative doing training and presentations at Adobe conferences, at trade shows and for large accounts. For the past ten years she has been teaching the Adobe Creative Suite applications and is an Adobe Certified Instructor and Print Specialist.

Beverly trains at Corporate Accounts, Certified Training Centers and with private individuals on Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat Professional. For the past four years, she has taught InDesign at UCLA Extension as part of their Design Communication Arts Certificate Program. In addition to her technical capabilities with the Adobe Creative Suite, Beverly has skills in photography, graphic design and watercolor painting. Her photography of international locations and digital image retouching has appeared in magazines and on billboards. Her digital artwork also raises money for organizations like Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS/LA), Best Friends Animal Society and other charities.
