Responsible Design allows you to create unique designs using Adobe Muse that look beautiful on any size screen—cell, tablet or desktop—without having to create a different version for each platform. In this session you will learn what Responsive Design is, why we design with “mobile first” in mind, and the differences between fixed and fluid layouts.

Topics covered will include:

  • What is Responsive Design?
  • Past history: Fixed Layouts
  • The Flexible Grid
  • Flexible Images
  • Understanding Media Queries
  • Setting up Breakpoints
  • Creating Buttons
  • Pinning Objects
  • Previewing Your Site on Desktop & Devices

Location and Parking

We've met at some pretty nice places in the past, but get ready for this. The September meeting is being held at the Los Angeles offices of Gensler, the worldwide design and architecture firm. In addition to designing the room in which LAIDUG will hold its meeting, Gensler, has designed the JetBlue Terminal at JFK, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Dubai, and Shanghai Tower—a few little projects like that.

This is the heart of downtown Los Angeles so parking isn't free. It's $15 for valet parking at Gensler's offices, but it's convenient and you know your vehicle will be secure. In addition, there are several public parking lots nearby.

Meeting Notes

Kelly McCathran gave a jam-packed presentation, as usual. She put responsive design in context by beginning with Adobe mobile apps. She then spoke about the coining of the term by Ethan Marcotte and how it applies not just to websites, but to all new media. Kelly showed several sites that handle responsive design well such as the Boston Globe, which coincidentally, happened to be the first newspaper to make use of the technology.

Kelly spoke about grid-based design and the fixed 960 pixel grid system in particular. She then got a little technical speaking about varieties of CSS and HTML, designing for multiple browsers, a formula for flexible or fluid grid systems and view port considerations. She then spoke about pixels, screen size, Retina displays and responsive image options. Kelly also spoke about breakpoints and relative type size and responsive forms.

Farthest Attendee

The bona fide LAIDUG member who travels the farthest specifically to attend the meeting will receive her or his choice of any one deal at MightyDeals up to $50.00. Mighty Deals offers fonts, templates, apps, e-books, etc. You need to prove to us that you traveled farthest to attend this meeting. Having recently moved to the area from somewhere else won't cut it. Be prepared to show us indication of your current residence—perhaps a driver's license or a utility bill. Decision of the administrators of the Los Angeles InDesign User Group is final. Winner — Jay Loteria

Live Auction

A lot of six Scangraphic Digital Type Collection specimen books will be auctioned at the meeting. The lot consists of two hardbound books of body text with dustcovers, and four loose-leaf books of body text with case. These are pre-owned items. Both the hardbound dustcovers and the loose-leaf case show wear appropriate to their age. But the books themselves are in excellent condition. These are beautifully produced reference books only. No digital typefaces are included. Bidding will start at $1 with $1 advances. Winner — Jeff Schimsky

LAIDUG is supported by raffles of donated prizes. No one is required to participate in the raffles. Raffle tickets are: 1 for $3, 2 for $5, 5 for $10, 11 for $20, 24 for $40, 32 for $50 and 65 for $100. All major credit cards are accepted.
