F. Scott Fitzgerald Meets the Los Angeles InDesign User Group
Next month’s meeting will be held on the Sunset Strip at 8000 Sunset, which also happens to be the address in Los Angeles 90046. 8000 Sunset sits on the same spot where the legendary Schwab's Pharmacy once stood. In the movie Sunset Blvd, William Holden's character calls Schwab's Drug Store "headquarters; a combination office, coffee klatch, and waiting room" for Hollywood writers. And so it was. F. Scott Fitzgerald had a heart attack there in 1940 while buying a pack of cigarettes. Songwriter Harold Arlen wrote "Over the Rainbow" by the light of the Schwab's neon sign. Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd used to play pinball in the back room. And the rumor still persists that Lana Turner was discovered at Schwab's, but it isn't true. Schwab's was closed in 1986 and replaced by 8000 Sunset a decade later. First F. Scott Fitzgerald. Now the Los Angeles InDesign User Group.
This Month’s Topic: Typography, OpenType and InDesign
Lettering is the heart of graphic design. In the past century the tools used to produce fine typography have changed dramatically. Even in the digital era, the underlying technology of type has improved well beyond the needs of most designers. At this meeting you will find out about the latest typographic functionality in InDesign.
Among the topics we’ll be covering are:
- Technological standards, including Unicode, OpenType and the Adobe Type Engine
- InDesign’s typographic features, especially the most useful ones that are hidden in plain sight
- Typefaces and type foundries, including some new designs and the independent foundries and type designers that produce them.
8000 Sunset
8000 Sunset is located at, well, 800 Sunset, Los Angeles, CA 90046 on the corner of Crescent Height Blvd. It’s a huge round shopping center located across the street from Greenblatt’s and the Laugh Factory. Both Virgin Megastore and the Sunset 5 movie theaters used to be located here. There is underground parking with validation from any of the vendors upstairs including Starbucks.
The Community Room is located on parking lot level P-1 in the northwest corner of the building. If you drive, enter the parking lot from either Laurel or Crescent Heights. If you don’t, take the singe elevator from plaza level to P-1 and go right.

Silent Auctions for Out-of-Town Events
Two lucky LAID members will receive registrations to the TYPO Conference in San Francisco, April 5-6 ($600.00 value) and the HOW Design Conference in Boston June 22-25 ($1295.00 value). We had originally planned to add them to our regular raffles. But since both conferences require availability and air travel, what’s the chance that the raffle winner would be able to take advantage of the prize? So we have been thinking that for these two items, silent auctions might be better. The auction for TYPO will close at the end of the March meeting. The auction for the HOW conference will close at the end of the May meeting. By the way, we are an official sponsor of the TYPO conference. If you want to see our name and logo somewhere other than our own website, go here and scroll down: TYPO Conference Sponsors
